Tshegofatso Phore is from Tsakane, a township in the Eastern part of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a self-taught photographer and has been photographing since 2017. His focus has mainly been on self-portraits. He started shooting when he was photographing his artwork, as he is also a contemporary artist.
He is motivated to shoot in black and white taken from chiaroscuro style of painting, which is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. He is drawn to this style as it focuses on creating dramatic images through shadows and lights. This also helps him focus on content and subject matter and the concept behind the work that he creates.
