Lungile Hlatshwayo obtained a degree in Social Work from the University of Durban- Westville, South Africa. She discovered her love for photography when she worked in the events and entertainment industry. She later enrolled with the renowned Market Photo Workshop in photojournalism and documentary photography.
She started taking photos to showcase the illnesses of society and hoping to find solutions through her social work experience. This grew into a conceptual body of work that now defines her work, which focuses on homelessness, youth recyclers and the inner-city of Johannesburg. Her experiences as a social worker armed her with an understanding and a sense of responsibility in balancing the social economy and ecosystem, which is reflected in her work.
